Pinterest and Instagram are ideal for promoting your products and services, especially if your target audience is women. Like all social media sites, Pinterest and Instagram will not drive very large amounts of traffic to your site overnight; however, a properly planned and executed "pinning" campaign can help to create awareness of your products and bring in plenty of interested, potential customers.

Know the Difference Between the Two

While Pinterest and Instagram are both photo-sharing sites, they have their differences. Pinterest is the place for creative photos showing how your products can be used. This particular site is also ideal for starting a "pin to win" contest where followers can share photos for an opportunity to win freebies and/or discounts. Instagram, on the other hand, is the place for photos showing how your products were made and/or what your workplace environment is like. It actually has a higher percentage of male users than Pinterest but is still used primarily by women.

Do not Oversell

Pinterest and Instagram are places where people come to relax and see (and/or post) interesting photos. If your photo board looks more like an advertising brochure, people will be turned off to what you have to offer.

The key to winning customers via Pinterest or Instagram is to make your photos interesting and creative. They should be the type of photos that people will want to link to and re-post on their social media sites. Your photos should show how your products benefit end users by improving their quality of life, beautifying their home, enhancing their physical appearance or what have you. You can even put up quote posters with witty words related to your industry or line of work.

Categorize Your Pins Properly

SEO is not just something that is used solely for your website. If you categorize your pins using the right keyword, they will be easily found by search engines. Do a bit of research and choose keywords that are likely to catch the attention of the people who are most likely to buy your products. If you only sell goods in a particular area, be sure to use the name of your city or town as part of the keyword.

At the same time, make sure the tags and categories you choose for your pins are not only search engine friendly but also highly related to the actual photo content. If people feel your tags are misleading, this could backfire on your company.

Pinterest and Instagram can help you to get noticed online and attract the attention of potential customers. However, in order to reap the benefits that these sites offer, you have to use them properly. If you are promoting your company on Pinterest, Instagram or both, make sure your photos are enticing, creative and not overly promotional. It is also imperative that you categorize them properly so that search engines will give them a good ranking.
