The Best and Worst Ads of the 2019 Big Game

The Best and Worst Ads of the 2019 Big Game

Content Writer: Lauren Snyder Lauren Snyder Content Marketing Coordinator

The biggest day of the year — the Super Bowl. Just kidding...kind of. Although millions of people tuned in to watch the New England Patriots vs. the Los Angeles Rams, I decided to rank some of the ever-famous 2019 Super Bowl commercials. Why? Because it sounded like fun!

I ranked these Super Bowl commercials on a scale of 1-10. This rank was determined by me and only me, so these shouldn't be taken too seriously. Things that helped determine their rank included:

  • Was it creative?
  • Was it funny?
  • Was it emotional?
  • Was it original?
  • Did it make me want to know more about the product?

Let's get started!

Super Bowl LIII Commercials

Doritos - Backstreet Boys & Chance the Rapper

Rank = 6

I really liked the mashup between the two artists in this commercial! At first, you aren't sure if the Backstreet Boys are actually going to make an appearance, but then they do (only fangirling a little bit)! I'm not a fan of super hot foods, however, I think I'd be willing to give the Flamin' Hot Nacho Doritos a try.

Michelob Ultra Pure Gold - Zoe Kravitz

Rank = 5

This commercial was definitely unique! If you listen to it through your headphones, the sound experience is even more dramatic. I don't know if this commercial won me over by any means, but it was different than any beer commercial I've seen before. Seemed more classy.

Stella Artois - Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw & Jeff Bridges as The Dude

Rank = 8

Alright, alright. I don't like beer, but this Super Bowl commercial made me want to choose Stella Artois over any other beer option for the sole fact that The Dude from The Big Lebowski was in it. "That rug really tied the room together, did it not?"

Coke

Rank = 6

This Super Bowl commercial was really cute and I loved that it was a simple message about unity, but it felt long and drawn out. It definitely was one of the more emotional commercials this year, so I do have to give it that.

 BON & VIV Spiked Seltzer - Anheuser-Busch

Rank = 4

I know I said I wasn't much of a beer person, but I don't really like spiked seltzer drinks either (sorry, I'm picky). I had seen this commercial a few times as it was leaked before the game, and I hate to say that I didn't really like it. My favorite part was the sharks at the end. The can does have a creative design, though!

M&M's Chocolate

Rank = 7

M&M commercials, in general, are classics! This one was really cute and a lot of moms out there probably related to it. You can't beat traditional M&Ms, but I may have to grab one of these candy bars.

Bumble - Serena Williams

Rank = 7

This Super Bowl commercial was genius! If you aren't familiar with the dating app called Bumble, then it may have gone over your head a little bit. With this app, it gives women the responsibility to message their matches within 24 hours or else they will disappear. So, "the ball is in your court" tied in perfectly! I loved that they used such a powerful female athlete for the commercial, too!

Hyundai - Jason Bateman

Rank = 5

This commercial stood out to me, but I didn't feel like there was a particular reason. I drive a Hyundai, so maybe that was why. The last part of the ad definitely made me giggle!

Olay - Sarah Michelle Gellar

Rank = 6

Sarah Michelle Gellar being in this commercial seemed fitting. We all know our phones can be weird sometimes with facial or fingerprint recognition, so I wasn't sure where this Super Bowl commercial was actually going. But Olay promoted their product in a funny way, which makes me more willing to try it.

WeatherTech - Pet Comfort

Rank = 7

Dogs. Any commercial with dogs or animals is great to me. And now I feel like I need to invest in WeatherTech products for my fur-babies and myself!

Budweiser

Rank = 9

I was surprised that this Budweiser commercial wasn't overly emotional like previous ones. I still think it was a great ad. The Clydesdales were back, there was a cute pup and Budweiser announced they now use wind power. The music in the background was an added touch!

 Expensify - 2 Chainz & Adam Scott

Rank = 6

I had no clue what Expensify was, but now I am interested in learning about it. This commercial didn't have anything really special about it, but it did make me chuckle a little bit.

Pepsi - Steve Carell, Lil Jon & Cardi B

Rank = 9

It's quite possible that this was my favorite Super Bowl commercial! I loved Steve Carell and this commercial wouldn't have been the same without him. Of course, Lil Jon and Cardi B played a big role with their famous catch-phrases. Still didn't make me like Pepsi, but I really liked the commercial.

Audi

Rank = 8

I had no clue what direction this commercial was going for a minute. However, it did have me laughing out loud at the end! For a second I thought it was the Planters commercial.

Avocados From Mexico - Kristin Chenoweth

Rank = 5

I'm not an avocado person, but once again, dogs were in the commercial, so I'm happy. I think it was unique to do a role-reversal of a dog competition and how, sometimes, the dogs don't want to cooperate.

Pringles

Rank = 8

Ah, Alexa. What a great thing for Pringles to include in their Super Bowl commercial. We've talked a lot about voice-activated devices in the digital marketing world, but I'm happy to see it in a normal commercial. Now I want to try a bunch of different Pringles and listen to Funky Town.

SimpliSafe

Rank = 7

I actually really liked this Super Bowl commercial! It mentioned a lot of fears that some people may or may not experience. But SimpliSafe is able to combat them and keep your home safe.

Mercedes-Benz - Ludacris

Rank = 8

This commercial wasn't all about selling its product, which is why I liked it! They weren't throwing it in your face the entire time and they added a comical aspect to it. Great job, Mercedes-Benz!

Planters - Charlie Sheen

Rank = 8

Cute, that's all I really have to say about this commercial. Planters commercials are another classic that you can always expect to see.

Google

Rank = 7

Google is such a big part of the world, and this Super Bowl commercial showed how it is used to bring worlds together. It wasn't overly emotional, but it could definitely pull on some heart strings.

Bubly - Michael Bublé

Rank = 8

I had been waiting for this commercial! After I saw the teaser, I knew it was going to be good. I loved the comical aspect that the commercial was focused around. Plus, I just really like Michael Bublé.

TurboTax

Rank = 6

I may have been a little creeped out by Robo Child, but the end was funny!

Toyota Supra - Pinball Wizard

Rank = 7

Another Super Bowl commercial for Toyota and I really liked it! The closed-course commercials always seem fake, so I liked how they took a unique spin on this one and did it within a pinball machine. The Supra looks pretty sweet if you ask me!

Verizon

Rank = 10

My heart, my little heart. I hope this commercial pulled on your heart strings as it did mine. Verizon wasn't even trying to overly sell its service or product in this commercial, but rather how it helped save someone's life!

ADT - Property Brothers

Rank = 5

I think it was smart for ADT to include the Property Brothers in their Super Bowl commercial. Even though ADT is a super well-known security company, throwing in some celebrities makes it stand out.

Sketchers - Tony Romo

Rank = 6

There wasn't anything crazy special about this ad, but it was cute! Tony Romo making an appearance was an added touch. I feel like I wanna try some Sketchers Slip-ons now!

Microsoft

Rank = 9

Wow, this one got me! Microsoft had a great message in this Super Bowl commercial and I hope other people felt as much emotion as I did. Everyone is unique in their own way and Microsoft helped these kids find a way to make their love for video games even stronger.

Amazon

Rank = 9

I watched this commercial several times and it made me laugh every single time! This ad was definitely a touchdown in my book!

KIA - Telluride

Rank = 7

At first, I had no clue where this commercial was going. It had a powerful message, but it seemed a little long. However, I think KIA did a great job introducing their newest vehicle!

The 100-Year Game - NFL Commercial

Honorable Mention

This commercial may have been better than the actual football game. I loved seeing all the familiar faces, especially my man Baker Mayfield!

There ya have it, folks. Do you agree with my rankings? Make sure to leave a comment and tell us what your favorite Super Bowl LIII commercial was this year!

Best Commercial Ever!

I think Bubly - Michael Bublé is one of my favorite. I give it a 10! Also, Verizon definitely deserves a 10.
