What is an elevator pitch?

An elevator pitch is a short speech that explains what you do and why you’re unique. Your elevator pitch should be short enough that you can give the entire pitch between floors in an elevator.

Need some help creating an elevator pitch? Here are some dos and don’ts of creating an elevator pitch:

A successful elevator pitch:
  • Solves a problem or answers a question
  • Is short, concise and to the point
  • Describes what makes you unique
  • Leaves your audience wanting to know more about you or your business
  • Is tailored to your audience
Good elevator pitches lack:
  • Technical and/or industry jargon
  • Long-winded speeches or stories
  • A strict script – you want to sound energetic, not monotonous

How can you create your elevator pitch?

  • Figure out what makes you better, or different, than your competition
  • Describe your skills (or your business’s services) in an easy-to-understand way
  • Write down talking points and practice your elevator pitch on someone you know until you have the general idea memorized
Effective elevator pitches give your audience plenty of information in a short time to explain what you do without overwhelming them. Elevator pitches can increase brand awareness as well. If your company has a standard elevator pitch all your sales people use, that consistent messaging will be memorable for clients and prospects.
