Should Your Business Be Using Instagram?

When it comes to social media, there are a lot of options – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and even Instagram. It’s hard to keep up with all of the different options, what they require and who is on them. Not all businesses can benefit from Instagram, but many can.

According to an article by Business Insider, 90 percent of the demographic on Instagram is under the age of 35. With more than 150 million people on this social media network, it's a younger crowd in comparison to what’s on Facebook.

This means that you need to identify your target audience. If you have a product or service that is targeting people who are under the age of 35, you would be better suited spending your time on Instagram as opposed to Facebook, Twitter or anywhere else. This is because there is a greater chance of being seen by the audience that you are targeting – and it is all done through images.

Whether your industry is fashion, food or anything else, Instagram can work to your benefit. It is photo based as opposed to text. This means that you want to take photos of things within your business as a way of marketing. If you’re a restaurant, you want to take photos of your menu items and place a small caption on them. This lets the photos speak for themselves.

The younger demographic wants their information here and now. They want to see a photo and move on. If they have to stop and read what’s something is about, you have already lost them. This is why Instagram is popular. There is no reading involved. If they like the photo, then they will take the time to learn more about it – and that’s when you can hook them into the product or service that you have to offer.

Not all businesses with a younger demographic are going to benefit from Instagram, however. Since it is heavily photo based, you have to be able to take a photograph of something. If there are no exciting photographs about what you are trying to pitch, you either need to get creative or find another venue – and this is when you have to look at examples of what does and doesn’t work on Instagram.

Photos are the ultimate marketing tool on Instagram, so find companies on Instagram and look at the photos they are posting. This should give you an idea of what people are finding interesting. If you can photograph your business in one way or another and you have a large demographic of people under 35, than Instagram is going to be a win for you. Otherwise, you need to stick with the social media that is text based so that you can describe yourself and what you do just a little bit more.
